June 1999
Hello Great '98! Here's the latest news from my
end... Class 9901 of Nuclear Power School has now graduated. As I'm
writing this, all we have left is the four-hour comprehensive exam. It's
a good feeling. We are the third NPS class of have '98ers in it. Good
luck to all the rest who follow. Tim Davis has been testing the bolts on the
landing gear of his T-34. So far they've held up, good luck Tim. John
Chau is at Camp Pendleton, he finished IOC not too long ago. Mike
Morgan is on VINCENNES, and the last word was that he was on
his way to Korea to pick up Brian Weaver. Small world. Andy Newsome's
wife is expecting. Best wishes to both of them. Henry Kaiser is now
done with IOC, and is stationed at 29 Palms. Tim Clark is alive and
well, and sitting next to Bob Dewitt '96 who's wife is expecting.
Jason Paulsen and Kristin Schrecker (of Annapolis) are getting married
on June 12, after Jason graduates from nuke school. Best of luck. Rob Ore, Mike Breen, Jesse Balboa, and Pete
Andrews are all moving in together in Downtown Charleston. Party
invitations soon to follow. Ed Hanley is engaged, and getting married
on 30 October. Brian Hogan (25th co.) is also engaged, and getting
married on the same day. Brian Cushman got married on December 30th to
the former Jerilyn Jensen. They were high school sweethearts. She is
expecting in 2003. Matt Chapman and his wife Barbie are expecting
their first child in November. Best wishes. Tim Yanik is in grad
school at UPENN. Justin Anderson is alive and well...CHUBES!
Now, from elsewhere in the fleet... An update
from all the guys in bat 99001 at Supply School in Athens, Ga. They
all graduate on 2 April and head to their assignments. Steve Carrier,
who is now married to the former Dawn Springmann of Maryland, is expecting a
child soon. He is headed to AS-40 FRANK CABLE in Guam. Pat McGrew is
recently engaged and will be headed to NAS Sigonella to be Materials
Officer. Lebron Butts will Disbo/Sales on DD-970,
CARON out of
Norfolk. Mark Symmes, now engaged to Lauren Narducci '00, will be
going to be the Supply Officer for Assault Craft Unit 1 in Coronado,
CA. And finally, Jason Fesnak will be headed to Earle, NJ to be
on AOE-4, DETROIT. They are all graduating despite never wanting to
leave Athens and the Washington St. Tavern. Finally, not on the Supply
side of the house, but on to one of the SWO brothers, Brendan Robinson
will be headed out to San Diego to be on FFG-33, JARRETT.
From Pete Halvorsen:
I just wanted to
write you with news about the '98ers over here at Oxford. Andy
Castiglione, Simon Latcovich, and myself are having a blast. Simon and
Andy are both studying incredibly hard, and I manage to get around to
a bit of the same from time to time. Aside from the weather,
consistently rainy and dreary, things are well. We are all managing to
take a few trips to cool places, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the rest
of Europe.
For me, I've been over in
Europe since 18 June, I spent the whole summer TAD as a State Dept.
Desk Officer for Latin America and Human Rights at the U.S. Embassy in
London, I even got to write a 30-page report on a published U.S.
Congressional Document. Here at Oxford, I'm acting quite a bit and
doing judo on the side.
Andy is achieving his goal of 'getting big.'
He's put on about 15 lbs of muscle and is trying to avoid telling
anyone he's a Rhodes (or Roads according to his orders) Scholar. For
his studies, he is grappling with philosophy and ethics.
Simon is
doing more math than anyone in their right minds should do for his
economics master's. He has been elected as one of the few Barmen/Social
Secretaries of his college, meaning he opens and closes all of their
parties. Fitting. He is also working out like a madman.
Some news
about other '98ers, I just spoke to Andrew Ruff, who is heading out to
Camp Pendleton after FMO school, Andy and I will be seeing him when he
comes out to Ireland for holiday in a bit. My roommate, Jeff Johnson, is
doing well and enjoying married life, he is TAD down in Norfolk for a
bit until June conquering the millennium bug for the Atlantic Fleet.
If any '98ers will be in England in the next year or so, Andy and I
have a killer house with two guest rooms. Open invites.
This news from Cory Shackleton:
Mike Ogden is my
roommate and he got Infantry; after IOC will be heading down to 2/2
in Camp Lejeune. The NFOs (Dan Traywick) are heading straight down to
Pensacola two weeks after graduation. We pilots have to hang out a
little longer, so some of us will be doing either Leatherneck or
ProTraMid, this time as LTs! Alan Sabol was supposed to start with
Delta Co, but got injured and ended up starting with us, he got Ground
Supply and will be heading to MCAGCC 29 Palms in the Mojave Desert
after his MOS school. Mike Cable got Infantry, Tom Elders got
Infantry, and unfortunately that is all I can remember off the top of
my head. Fox company was lucky enough to be the second company in TBS
to have a seven day war vice a three day one. We were also lucky
enough to witness just about every season Virginia has to offer during
it! We had a really good staff and we've had fun, but we are ready to
leave! A lot of the OCS graduates ask us what being at the Naval
Academy was like, and the most accurate comparison that we give them
is: "It's like 4 years of TBS." Now you know why we can't
wait to get out!
We've heard from Dave Townley who is currently at
Corpus Christi getting ready to solo. Derek Dudash has completed
flight school as an NFO and is heading to the FRS (although it's still
called the RAG by most). Brad Storey is working as the intel officer
for an F-14 squadron at NAS Oceana and goes on deployment in January.
Russ Crawford finally ended his ten-month TAD with the operations
department (at USNA) and departed for Pensacola with a bright, shiny
Navy Achievement Medal pinned to his chest for his efforts. Tony
Sclafani graduated in December and is now in Pensacola for NFO flight
training. Gilda Addessi graduated from Delta Company and is in
Pensacola for Aviation Maintenance Officer school. John Schroeder
graduated from Delta Company and is almost done with the Infantry
Officer course. Al Kagen graduated from Delta Company and headed down
to Pensacola to be a Marine Pilot.
From Tony Ramos:
Hello from Fort Bragg,
NC, home of the 82nd Airborne Division. For all who don't
know, I was commissioned into the U.S. Army. I attended the Army's
infantry officers course and airborne school before reporting to my
first infantry platoon, Dco. 3-505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Jumping out of planes is great. It is nothing like airborne school for
those of you who have been. I just made my first full combat load mass
attack jump last night. I have become a prime target for school
bashing from the West Pointers. Everyone in my chain-of-command is a
West Pointer. I can't wait until the Army/Navy game. Soon, I will be
off to U.S. Army Ranger School, so good luck to everyone and have a
great summer.
That's all for this month '98. I hope everyone
is doing well and enjoying your time in the fleet. Until next month... Fair winds... DSF.
