October 1999

Hello Great '98! I don't know about the rest of you, but the months keep flying by. My training is keeping me so busy, it seems like by the time I finish one article, it's already time to write the next one. I hope all of you are enjoying fleet life, and now to hear something about it.

From Chris Keith at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, TX:
Well, there are more '98ers here every day and the first of us have just graduated and earned our wings of gold. That's right. We got winged on the 9th of July and are now off to NAS Corpus Cristi for two weeks for some good ole leadership training then off to NAS Jacksonville for the P-3 rag. After that I will be staying for my tour. Katie Baldwin is going to NAS Brunswick in Maine and Joel White is going to NAS Whidbey Island. Hope the rest of you all are having fun with whatever you are doing and good luck to the rest of my fellow aviators waiting to get winged.
That's great that '98ers are getting wings already. Carina Hall completed primary flight training at Pensacola and qualified for jets. In mid-July she reported to Meridian, MS, for intermediate pilot training. Dave Hickey is there also, and he sent me a letter.
I just arrived in beautiful Meridian, MS and will start intermediate jets soon. Jeff Immel (and Carina Hall) will start at the same time. Josh Peterson and Dave Sagunsky are a couple classes ahead of us here. I talked to Chris Gilmore the other day and he said he's lovin' it down at Sub school. He mentioned something about getting married. Who knows! Best of luck to all.
From my old companymate Ron Wisdom:
It has been awhile since the days of old 12th Company but I'm here to report that I have completed TBS 4-98 in December, FMOC 1-99 (USMC Financial Managers Officer Course Camp Lejeune, NC) in February and am stationed here in Kansas City at the DFAS-KC center. Basically, this is the HQ for USMC finance and where we get paid. I am doing well being three and a half-hours from home (St. Louis) and will be here for at least three years. There are a lot of civilians here too so it sometimes gets complicated with Marines and civilians. I will complete my MBA hopefully by the end of three years and hopefully go back to USNA to teach.

I have spoken to and visited Rodney Clagg who is in prototype school and loving it I might add (just kidding). He is going to get married in September. I have also spoken to Bill Taylor, my striper roomie, who is graduating from TBS today or tomorrow and will be going to Okinawa as a financial manager 3404--same as me.
From Dale Matheny:
I just talked to my roommate from the Academy, Dan Hallock, and he just got back from his WestPac a few weeks ago. He qualified a couple of days before he got back and got his Swo pin and all. (Dale is in NY for prototype.) New York is pretty nice this time of year, and the little town we live in is great. There's a ton to do and I have only left once since I've been here because I've been busy trying to do everything here. We just took our 50% exam today. It was tough, but manageable.
Well, I can relate to Dale; the guys down here in Charleston just took our Transition phase exam two days ago. We were on midnight shift, so the exam started at 2050 and ended at 0050. Kind of weird. Anyway, class 9807 has there prospective boat assignments already. Out of Pearl Harbor: Tim Schubert on BUFFALO, John Frye on KEY WEST and Eric Cole on CHEYENNE. Out of Norfolk: Erick Easy Edwards on NORFOLK and Ed Stickle on HAMPTON. Out of Kings Bay, GA: Garth Johnston on MAINE (Gold) and strangely enough, Rob Carnell and Jake Scott will be on the same boat out of Kings Bay, but on different crews (Blue and Gold). They were roommates at the Academy for three years. Go figure. There are many others here, but with our schedules, it's hard to get a hold of everyone, so there will be more to come. Tim Clark just joined Crew Alpha of the MTS-626 (my crew), and we were in Echo-10 together back in plebe summer. When I saw those dolphins on his chest way back then, I never figured that one day I'd be trying to earn some of those for myself. I guess you never know.

L to R: '98's 2LT Bob Geiger and Ensigns Brian Hogan, Ken Wallace, CAPT Wallace, MIDN 1/C Mikey Wallace, and Ensigns, Steve Aldridge and Pete Hourigan. '98ers gather around CAPT Wallace on the steps of Mother B after his retirement ceremony.

The last bit of information that I have is that Pete Halvorson passed his exams at Harvard, so he gets to stay there a little longer. And finally, in the random category, Brian Weaver has a new dog.

Keep up all the hard work '98, and best of luck in all your endeavors.

Fair winds... DSF.
