September 2000

Hello great '98! Well, now the summer is winding down, and we are all well into our Navy or Marine Corps "jobs," even for those of you who went to graduate school. As usual, let's go straight to the fleet to hear what is new with the '98ers. I'll start off with a note from Dave Hurren:
By the time this gets out I'll be on my second deployment trying to stop the flow of drugs into the country from South America and the Caribbean. I've maxed out the time to get my SWO pin, anyone else? I'll be transferring out of Mayport in December, hopefully to Arctic (AOE-8) in Earle, NJ. I think I'll miss Roadhouse (Rodi), though. Aaron McGowan, Rollo Salvatierra, and Grant Flynn are all living in Hawaii, not together of course, but with their wives. Go SWO!
I hope your search for drugs proves effective!

I think this next email is from Guy Snodgrass, but he never mentioned his last name, so I hope I have it right.
Just graduated from MIT on 2 June with a master's in nuclear engineering and another master's in electrical engineering and computer science. I was rooming with Brendan Beer '99. On 2 June Micah Smith and I also had our promotion ceremony to LTJG. Micah graduated that day with a master's in mechanical engineering. He dropped the desire to be a pilot and hooked it over to a sub interview with ADM Skip Bowman, so he's now a sub guy. He got a swank assignment at MIT for the summer before reporting to sub school. I hooked it out of Cambridge and just made it to Pensacola today for API (start tomorrow, 7 June ). I'm here for pilot training and have already met a couple of my API Classmates, so far all '00.
This letter sounds likes it's from Guy, but if I got it wrong, you'll see my correction later.

Now to another aviator, Shannon Callahan:
On 31 March, several '98ers happily pinned on their Wings of Gold, in Pensacola, becoming NFOs: Silas Bouyer, Shannon Callahan, Josh Potocko, Johnny Loftin, Dave Manka, Darren Sweeney, and Rafe Wysham. Josh Potocko will be flying S-3s, Darren Sweeney and Rafe Wysham got F-14s, and Silas Bouyer, Johnny Loftin, Dave Manka and I will be flying EA-6B Prowlers! Silas and I went through SERE together and are now about to start electronic warfare school at Whidbey Island. Then on to the RAG. Arriving in Washington, we met up with other Classmates working to be Prowler ECMOs (electronic countermeasures officers): Jake Schmitter, Bryan Taylor, Brad Horning, Ryan Ahler and his wife, Laura, a GW grad, John Dinh, Tom McGowan, Jody Young and Max Miller.

Up here, we're flanked by EP-3 and P-3 types also going through training: Scott Kinkele, and Joey White. Everyone's enjoying the long summer days and outdoor fun characteristic of the Northwest--and it hasn't even rained that much lately! Hope I didn't leave anyone out! Best wishes to everyone in '98!
Thanks for the good scoop on everyone, Shannon.

Surprisingly, that's it for the letters this month. Other matters of note are that our Class funds are doing well. If you get reminders in the mail to donate, please do. For those of you who have been donating already, thank you. We will start with the preps for our five-year Reunion soon. If anyone is interested in helping out or has ideas to share, please email me. If you are interested in buying an Army-Navy 100th anniversary book, you can go to www.goarmynavy100.com. Also, I have a few Class T-shirts left over (a guy in '00 actually mailed them to me). So, if anyone would like a Class T-shirt, let me know. Other than that, all is well on my boat. I'll have some pictures to send to print later.

Keep the emails coming '98. Pictures are great too. Without you, I have no article to write. Parents, once again, if your son or daughter is too busy, feel free to write a letter for them. Thank you. Fair winds...DSF
