September 2001

Greetings, '98! Dave Forman is on WestPac after making a record for the fastest move from Washington to Hawaii. I ran into Kathy McMorrow and Steve Fortmann this last weekend and they wish all their best. Steve is getting promoted to Lieutenant this fall (well on his way to the first admiral in the Class of '98). Congratulations to Bonnie and Kenji Gjovig on their recent marriage. The news is a little thin this month, but Tony Licari has come through once again.

I am now on recruiting duty in New Jersey. Bill Burrack, Gaby Bolton, Rob "Flanders" Danberg, Blaine Bitterman, and I stay in touch over email. I am proud to report that Blaine is not yet a postal worker but is giving it "his best shot." As for me, I am auditioning for the new movie "Fletch Wins" that is due to come out next year. There is a role for an Italian pizza delivery guy and I think I have a shot. Chevy Chase won't be in this one unfortunately. This recruiting gig isn't too bad after all. Last month, I met Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) and went to 92.3 K-Rock (home of the Howard Stern show) to set up some public service announcements. No, Howard wasn't there. Dave, can I start up a Salty Sam column from the grave and put it in Shipmate? Oh man, we could have some fun with that eh comrade? Nazario, we'd nail you, good boy.

It's great to hear from you Tony. I'm surprised Danberg is keeping in touch, he was always busy writing a letter to his sister (ring-ring).

Now for the news from fellow San Diegans Pam and Marc Williams:
Pam (Phillips) Williams and I recently returned from Nicki Maunder's wedding in Pittsburgh. She is now Nicki Pierce. In attendance were Jany Callaco, Gilda (Addessi) Buchan, Jason Smith, and Danyelle (Low) Prince.

We are expecting a baby girl due sometime this September when our lives will be turned upside down. Pam works at Beach Group One in Coronado and runs into some Classmates now and again over there. The only person I consistently run into on 32nd Street is Melissa (Plean) Plaskonos.

Attached is a photo from a recent Padres game: Adam Fleming, Kevin Popp, Tony Dunystee '99, and Kevin Crisson '99. While there they ran into some grads tailgating so we took a picture and it is attached.
Congratulations, Nicki. Get the sleep while you can, Marc. Now for some info on life in Italy from Chris Robinson (Naples98@hotmail.com):
Ciao '98ers from Bella Napoli. I'm still here in Italy doing the Protocol thing. My two years here so far have been a blast and I have enjoyed the shore duty in Europe tremendously. I can't believe I get paid to do this job. I've got at least another year here and many more cities/countries to see.

Here is an update on some of the '98ers I have run into lately.

My roommate for three years at the Academy, Brandon Warren, is on deployment with ENTERPRISE and pulled into Naples about a month ago. Unfortunately, I missed him but fortunately, it was because I was traveling for two weeks through Spain, France, and Switzerland with another '98er, Sarah Rollings. Brandon did tell me he got engaged at a Dude ranch in Arizona to a girl he met in Pensacola, FL. If you were in P-cola with him you may remember her, Chris Consoldane. I wish him all the best.

Sarah recently left LASALLE (AGF-3) for postgraduate school in Monterey, CA. She decided the EDO community would better suit her so she traded her SWO pin for a slide ruler and a master's degree in naval/mechanical engineering. I wish her all the luck in the world and I miss her.

A couple of weeks ago, I walked around a corner on base and ran right into Lydia Duffey. She is here on Det with HC-2. I've had a chance to hang out with her and her sister, Liz, who is here for a month visiting her. It has been nice to catch up with an old Plebe Companymate. She has been filling me in on gossip from the old Company. She is doing well and enjoying the pilot thing, although, I don't think she has flown too much since being here.

The next person many of you may remember, especially if you were in 24th Company or were on restriction, is LT Angela Katson, 24th Company Officer. She is the admin officer here on base. You may find this hard to believe but she is actually a really nice person once the us vs. them mentality is taken away.

Well, that is all for now. If any of you are in the Med and stop by Naples, let me know, I have an amazing house on the water and an extra bedroom.
Thanks for the update, Chris. On to the news from down south from Robby "The Werm" Burton:
All is well at Camp Lejeune. All of the '98ers passed the pulse test and were selected for Captain. Stephen Campbell got back from his MEU(SOC) float with most of his tanks and minimal communicable diseases. He is now headed to Norfolk for duty with H&S Company, Security Forces BN. Already my back is feeling better now that I'm not carrying his pack at Tank Bn anymore. I got married on St. Paddy's Day here at CLNC to the beautiful Julianne Christen. The '98ers in attendance were: Brendan Eagan (best man), Rocky Burns (who also recently got married), Ev Alcorn, Matt "Muggs" Maloney, Doug Ramsey (who decided to wear his dress greens for the reception), and Jeremy Winters. My wife and I would like to express our thanks for their attendance. Of most notable absence was Chris Gilmore. I'm not sure if he is still alive or not since no one has heard from him in awhile. I'll be headed for the sunny 29 Palms in July for Cax and hopefully will get orders soon to depart J-actionville.
Robby, thanks for the status report on 12th Company. Enjoy your honeymoon. I'd like to include some photos of wedding in the next issue. Well that concludes another month, I hope the rest of you are doing well. Take care! -Shawn
