March 2002

Hello again, great '98! Here we are well into 2002. I was at the movies the other day and saw a dad wearing a "USNA 2005" t-shirt. Scary. Here we go to our letters for this month: The first is from Mike Acosta:
Just wanted to say hi to everyone from good 'ol MCAS New River. Here is what I have, short and sweet. I'm here in HMM-264 along with Cory Shackelton, Sam Clark, Bret Allison, and a bunch of other grads. I ran into Jon Sabado while out at the CH-46 FRS in Camp Pendleton, he and his wife are doing well. He is now over in Okinawa enjoying the weather. Bumped into Mike Ogden and Dan Martin at the Army-Navy game down here. Dan and his wife are doing good too. It seems they keep Dan busy doing the Comm thing, but he is doing well in the field. Greg Gehman and wife, Bethany, just had their first boy, Thomas. He is enjoying life in Southern California, going through the Hornet FRS at Miramar. Bret Allison and his wife, Kimberly, are expecting their second kid in late April. Phil Dana is kicking butt in the SWO community and advancing nicely, he and Jen are expecting their first kid soon as well. Phil Duba got married a few months ago, still doing well at Lockheed Martin. Congrats, Phil. Bob Geiger is up at Quantico after a stint in the stumps as an infantry officer. He and Michelle have one boy, Friden. Mike Hall is at Lemoore flying Hornets and doing well. Nowell McKnight is at Barstow MCLB after a tour on the rock. Phrogs Phorever.
Thanks for the good letter, Mike.

Dave Silverman is busy with his new marriage and his SEAL team, so his mother took the time to write a letter:
After returning from a six month deployment to the Far East with SEAL Team 5, Dave got engaged to his girlfriend. We are pleased to announce that Dave married Hollis Wells, Cornell Hotel School '00, on 19 October 2001 in Gloucester, MA. The wedding was moved up from December 2002 when Dave learned he was being sent to Guam for a new posting as of 1 December. It is an accompanied tour so Hollis will go with him. This was supposed to be an elopement, but the families insisted on attending. Doug Silverman '05 was able to get away from the Academy for the ceremony. Joe Femenia '98 was able to attend the small, swiftly planned ceremony as he was attending a school in Newport News. Dave and Hollis plan to have their marriage blessed in the Catholic Church when they return to live in the U.S., so there will be a ceremony and reception for all their friends then.
Thank you so much for the letter, Mrs. Silverman. The Navy also forced me to adjust my marriage date, but we had a wonderful time, and I'm sure you did too.

That's it for the letters this month. However, I did run into Dan Martin and John "Monty" Montgomery at the beach on the Eastern Shore of Oahu. I was coming out of the water from snorkeling, and they were about to get in to SCUBA dive. Once again, small world. They are both doing well at Camp Lejune, NC. I also saw Rick Ullman on his way through Honolulu to Guam. He's stationed there, though he doesn't spend much time there since he's always out planning ops for SEAL teams in other countries. I also ran into Jen Seguin again, this time at Hickam AFB. She was taking the same aerobics class that my wife was taking. Between flying helos, she found time to run the Honolulu marathon. She seems to be liking it out here in Hawaii. And for my last note on our Classmates: I was looking at a Power Point presentation to encourage Midshipmen to go submarines. It was a pretty good product, and on the last slide it said "Go Subs!" and had a picture of a Midshipman taking an oath. It was none other than Jake Harriman, USMC. I got a chuckle out of that. And finally, on a personal note, my wife, April, is pregnant with our first child, a baby boy, due on 14 May, April's birthday. We'll see how close he comes to the due date.

Keep it fun and safe, '98! Fair winds. -DSF
