June 2003

Hello great '98! We are another month closer to the reunion this fall. Planning is going well. Shoot Dave or myself an email if you plan on being in town for the festivities. Information is available on our Class web site: stahlsl@truman.navy.mil) mother, Joyce:
Sam is serving on HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75) as the reactor electrical officer and as everyone knows TRUMAN is on a scheduled deployment in the Med. They left Norfolk on 5 December but a return date is yet to be determined because of the war. Sam's roommate is Tina Dalmau, which turned out really good, as Tina and Sam were both in 14th Company together for three years at the Academy. They both bought houses in the Virginia Beach area while stationed in Norfolk. While on this deployment Sam and Tina visited Monaco on Christmas Eve and then spent New Years in Crete. In February they had a port visit to Slovenia and Sam and Tina took the train and spent a day in Venice, Italy and then went skiing in the Alps. That was their last port visit and have been at sea now for over 60 days and as Sam has written still no "beer day" because of the war.

I am proud to tell everyone that Sam was named Propulsion Plant Watch Officer of the Year for HARRY S. TRUMAN and then was named Commander Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet Propulsion Plant Watch Officer of the Year. Sam has been informed that when she separates from the Truman next January she will have a shore tour at Dam Neck, VA, filling a LCDR billet in charge of Equal Opportunity programs on the base. She is very happy to get that assignment as she wanted to stay in the Virginia Beach area and finish her master's in engineering management at Old Dominion, which she has been working on while on deployment.

I am in contact with Matthew Shearin who was also in 14th Company with Sam and Tina and he is presently stationed at the Academy teaching Naval Science. His wife, Pilar, is in the nurse anesthetist program in Richmond, VA. CB Davis who was in 25th Company is teaching Plebe English at the Academy and he bought a house in the Annapolis area. His mom, Sylvia, and I became best friends when CB and Sam were in Quantico after their Plebe Year‹we drove down to Quantico together every weekend to bring Sam and CB home. So Classmates form life long friends through their Academy experience and so do the parents. I send my prayers and thoughts to all the military especially those in harm's way for everyone to have a safe return home in the near future.
This next one is a long awaited update from Dale Matheny:
I'm living in Warwick, RI, right now, having transferred from Norfolk, VA, off my submarine (JACKSONVILLE) in September. I'm teaching at NAPS in the math department and it is great. It's weird to be a part of the system now. It doesn't seem that long ago that we were squaring our corners and shouting "Go Navy, Sir!" I'm also taking night Classes at the University of Rhode Island, which keeps me busy. Also at NAPS are Chris Keith, Alex Savage, John Yi '97, and Mike O'Hara '95. One of my supervisors is Liz Gambuto, wife of Classmate Mike Conrady. Heather "Holy S***" Burwell, you're still here?" Burwell is working in the same building, with BOOST I think. I see her periodically. The other day I saw Brandon Dye and his wife. He's working in Newport as well.

I had some contact with some of our Classmates in December at the Army-Navy game. I met with Jen Werner, Chad Seagren, and Roger Ashworth for the game. While we were there I saw Jason Paulsen, Mike Fourte, JT Merchant, and John Delaroderie '97. I keep in touch with Eric Anderson, Dave Danelo, Chad, Bill Delmar, Steven Dihn Le, and Tim Feist via email. Eric is currently deployed on NIMITZ. Steve is a civilian as of 31 March. Chad is currently in Monterey going to grad school. Dave and Tim are living the married life, and Bill has been flying under the radar lately.

Now, on to the important news. While in New York City for Fleet Week/OpSail 2000 Roland Tink '97 and I were walking by Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport when I made eye contact with this beautiful woman at the Sequoia restaurant. She was dazzled by the mandatory white uniform and we hung out all evening. We spent the next day together as well, and then started a long distance relationship between Norfolk and New York City. Two long years later, in true fairytale form, I married the former Tara Ann Pastrana at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, NY, on 12 October 2002. She hails from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, and is amazing. I've included a couple of pictures from the wedding. In attendance were my former roommate Dan Hallock, Chad Seagren, Jason Paulsen, Dave Danelo, Eric Anderson and family, Steve Le, Roger Ashworth, Roland Tink '97, and Chris Handwerk '96. We partied it up at Westbury Manor and the crowd went wild. Tara and I left the next day on our honeymoon and then I reported to NAPS upon our return. We are really looking forward to our first summer as newlyweds up here. Take care and we'll look forward to seeing you all at Army-Navy. Roger, Chad, and Jen, this time we'll have a real tailgater.

Welcome to the Navy Mrs. Matheny

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Matheny. This next short update is from DeMarr Thomas:
Greetings '98. I've been busy since leaving USNA. I married Candice Marie Reeves of Spring, TX, in 1999. We have a two-year-old daughter, Trinity. Recently during my stint in the Middle East as an Army Ranger I ran into a couple of Alumni; Mark Harrison '97 and Tom Donovan '95. Since returning, I was picked up for flight school. We are now in Fort Rucker, AL, about two months from finishing UH-60 training. Trinity can identify all the helicopters flying overhead by sound. She seems just as mesmerized by them as I do. She's definitely more interested in the Apache's though. Perhaps she'll follow in the footsteps of her "aunt" Beth Ann Thomas!
Thanks, DeMarr. As for the rest of you‹keep the news coming. Fair winds. -Shawn
