May-June 2004

Greetings Class of '98. I hope that you all had wonderful holidays with your families and friends and that this issue finds you winning the battle of the holiday bulge! Here's some news from Gaby Bolton ( gboltonO5@gsb.columbia.edu):
I just went to a Yankees game with Carlos Jativa this weekend, and we took some fun photos, so I thought I'd send them to you. Things are going well here in the Big Apple, and I must say adapting to this new civilian life has not been difficult. Does anyone remember if I was ever in the military? Just kidding, Semper Fi, and if anyone wants to get in touch with me or any of the other wubas, send me an email. By the way, I don't really have a son, I have a dog, so stop asking. Rodi does have a son, though, so you can ask her about him.

Oh, and here's a great picture of Sully and Jimi Bailey's daughter, Aisling (photo did not come through to Shipmate). Isn't she adorable? She's a healthy happy little girl, and she'll probably be at homecoming, so those of you that are there will probably get to meet her. She was bom this September.
And from submariner Kenji Gjovig in Bella Napoli, Italy:
Hey Ninety-Great! How is everyone doing? I'm writing from Naples, I where, surprisingly enough, we are basically having our own '98 reunion out here! My wife, Bonnie, and I have been here for a year now. I work for ComSubGruEight as a watch officer and in the submarine special operations department (spook stuff). Naples is as crazy as the stories about it are, but also allow for some great travel opportunities throughout Europe. Anyone is more than welcome to come stay with us and visit bella Napoli! Anyhow, here are updates on some other people. Christina Neel is stationed at ComSubGruEight with me (odd place for a SWO). Danny Garcia is here as a MetOC officer. Other recent but non-'98 grads in our office include Drew Richards '97, Jason Neal '97, John Mues '97, and Matt Drag'96 (soon to go back to SOAC to be a DH on a sub). Other '98ers I've seen in Naples are: Mike Borelli who's here at CTF67 and will be taking the reins of Flag Loop after their Change of Command in September and Sarah Neville works for NRCC Naples doing contracting work. I've also seen Kristian Wahlgren '99 and his wife, Clancy Oust had a beautiful baby girl, Halle!) who's also at NRCC with Sarah. Erin and Kevin Meehan '99 are here. Kevin works for MSC and Erin is up in Gaeta on the Sixth Fleet staff. Ben Selph '99 and his wife, Emily, are still on my old ship, SALT LAKE CITY (SSN-716) but are on their way out here to also be at CSG8. Here are some additional updates from other '98ers I've been in touch with. Tom Stickle is stationed at ComOpTevRonSix in Norfolk, VA. They are doing testing and evaluation on various submarine systems. His wife, Alicia (Evans) '99, is a Marine stationed on the Nashville on deployment right now. JW Hale is stationed at ONI in DC and doing well. He may be going to do a short tour on a DesRon staff prior to going back as a DH. Brian Guise and his wife, Karen, had a baby boy, Logan, a year ago and are living in Great Lakes IL. Brian is on nuclear recruiting duty and going to Northwestern to get his MBA prior to going back as a DH on a sub. Jed Espiritu and his wife, Liza, just had their second baby (daughter Jordan was first and now Ella). He is at NPGS in Monterrey, CA working on a masters prior to a sub DH tour. Scott Barsezewski is stationed at the Joint Forces Intelligence Command (JFIQ in Norfolk providing intel support to the Joint Forces Command and SubLant. He is getting married to his fiancde, Laura in September at the Chapel. Tara Berger also got back from a recent deployment to the Gulf on Kearsarge. She's now a single mother living in a doublewide in the backwoods of Georgia while working the late shift at a DQ (her words, not mine). Nicole Nollette got out of the Navy a couple of months ago after a MetOC tour in Souda Bay. She just started classes at the MIT Sloan Business School. Titus Fortner and Arnie Stankus recently reported to Recruit Training Command at Great Lake, IL. Titus is doing a tremendous amount of swing dancing while considering lateral transfer options from the submarine force. Mike and Rebecca Newton (both '98ers) are doing really well in San Diego. He's flying C2s (recently got back from a nine-month deployment!) and she just got out of the Marines. Now her full time job is looking after their two kids--Hayley (3) and Joe (1). Brit Smith is less than a year from finishing his tour up at Submarine School in Groton. He and Jeri have a son Britton Jr. and a daughter due in November. He's working on B-school applications now. Also at Sub School are Jason Weed (heading back to be a DH before too long) and Jonas Zikas. Roger Ashworth just got out of the Navy (after finishing at sub school) and will be starting Bschool at Georgetown this fall. Shannon Callahan just got back from a nine and a half month deployment flying EA-6s off LINCOLN during OIF. Bryan Taylor, Jenn Stillings (Campbell) '96, and Christopher Jason '97 where in her squadron. Other '98ers in the Wing include Roger Jacobs and Kaitan Gupta (E-2s) and Chris Hill (helos). Sara Stires is in Lemoore, CA, flying Superhornets for VFA-102. She recently got engaged to Chad Redmer '99 a fellow ultimate teammate of mine. That's all I can think of offhand.

I wanted to put in some quick plugs. First of all, please encourage everyone to visit the Class web site: www.usna.org. Second, people should visit the Alumni homepage and log in. They have a feature where you can sign up for free lifetime email forwarding (ie: kgjovig@1998.usna.com). That's an awesome deal-free lifetime email forwarding. Third: Check out this web site: http://directory.smartlink.navy.mil/cgi-bin/nph-web500gw/ from a .mil computer (use it at work, not from home) and you can find nearly anyone that has anything to do with the Navy. Great way for all of us to get in touch with each other.

If anyone is passing through Europe, please stop and visit Bonnie and me in Naples. You've all got a place to stay with us. God bless and keep in touch.
Here's a quick update from Jeannette (Gaudry) and Chris Haynie:
I deployed with HMLA-369 (my squadron) to fly Cobras in OfF, and was gone till the end of July. Derek Crousore and Nate Marvel are also in my squadron, as are Jay Moorman '95, Brad Butler '97, Justin Woodruff '00, and Devin Smiley '00. We are now working up for our seven-month deployment to Okinawa as part of the 3 1 st MEU. Crousore, Marvel and I are flying much and sleeping little, and the Marine Corps is getting its money worth for sure. We are living in Southern California, though, so it cannot be too bad ... Chris (my husband) is still up at the School of Infantry, as the S-3 and S-4 for MCT Battalion. He is spending most of his free time road biking and racing. I am spending my free time running still...

I'll catch up in a bit...
I'm certain that all of you that attended the reunion enjoyed it as much as I did. For those who weren't able to join us, you were sorely missed and we hope to see you at the next one.

I'm proud to announce that in the interim, my wife gave birth to our first son, Caleb Bowman Johnson. He's home and healthy and loves to eat ... big surprise. Additionally I got out of the Marine Corps on August 31 after six-weeks of terminal leave and am now a real estate broker in Wilmington, NC. If any of you need any type of help or advice in a real estate transaction email me or visit my web site at www.cbjohnson.com.

If any of you have anything you'd like to see published, in Shipmate, please email it to me at cbjohnson@1998.usna.com. Enjoy the pictures from the reunion. God Bless and fair winds! -CBJ
