December 2006

Greetings All! I hope this issue finds everyone in full swing with the holidays. We have a couple of updates, one from Jim Day:
Hello '98-

It is great to read about all the exciting things our classmates are doing both inside and outside the military on these pages, and that so many of us are staying in touch with one another.

Last summer I (temporarily) traded my golf clubs for a road bike and entered my first triathlon. I bought the bike a week before the race...because I figured it would be like, well, riding a bike. I was reminded again how much work I need on my biking skills when I entered another tri in Luray, Virginia in May of this year. I heard someone call out "Jim Day...on your left!"....looked over my shoulder and found Navy swimming star Michelle McKenna closing quickly. We caught up for about 10 minutes during the event and then she pedaled away. We were joined for a nice little Shipmate photo-op after the race by Jason Dalley, who had a fantastic performance in his first tri, finishing in the top 25% of the field. Michelle finished 2nd in her age group and 5th overall.

Jason is enjoying his work at National Virginia Realty, and Michelle has recently gotten engaged / married and begun a career as a consultant at SPA.

I have one year left in the law / MBA program at Georgetown, and am planning on entering private practice after graduation. Work took me to New York City for part of this summer, where I had the chance to catch up with Arny Stankus and Joe Femenia. Arny found his way back from the Iraqi desert to the jungles of the New York commercial real estate market, and Joe was working as a trader for Goldman Sachs before returning to Columbia to finish his MBA.

While in New York, I shared an apartment with my USNA roommate, JP Sevilla. We managed to keep the place a little cleaner this time than we did at boat school...must be that married life has had its impact on my former roomie. JP landed a very prestigious summer internship at one of New York's top law firms. I'm looking forward to seeing him and his wife Debbie (whose Duke classmates I seem to keep running into) in New York next year.

Look me up if you are ever in DC... JIM.DAY@1998.USNA.COM.

An update from Ed Hanley:
Greetings Class of '98! After 8 years I figure I owe a brief update on life after leaving the Yard. Spending 3 years on USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765), based in Norfolk, I managed to get a UNITAS deployment in prior to transferring. My wife Stephanie and I then headed to London in 2002, where I worked in ops planning JTF exercises on the staff of Commander, US Naval Forces Europe prior to the command's transfer to Naples. Not only was it an awesome job, we both got the opportunity to travel all the time. At last count I have 26 different countries in my passport from the 3 years in London.

In November 2004 I was diagnosed with oral cancer. Having never used any tobacco, it was certainly a surprise. But after 3 surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment (both at Bethesda and Walter Reed) I am happily recovered. In May of '06 the Navy medically retired me, so I get to keep all my doctors, which is excellent.

Stephanie is an 8th grade science teacher at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, VA, just outside Washington, DC. Having received my masters degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State in May of '06, I was able to get a job as a project manager for Clark Construction Group, the largest general contractor in the Mid-Atlantic. I'm having a blast building buildings and running my own show. I just started work on putting in a new bioengineering laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park. Finally, we just learned that we are number 5 on the list to adopt a child from Russia. We're both very excited, but it's still a roller-coaster ride since we don't know when we'll get the phone call to go to Russia.

I hope this letter finds everyone well. Please feel free to write at hanley1030@msn.com. Best Wishes and Fair Winds and Following Seas, Ed and Stephanie Hanley!
As I write, my wife Carissa and I are expecting the arrival of our third child, Ava Catherine, any day now. When she arrives, we'll have a three year old, a one year old and a newborn. As I've explained to a couple of people, my new definition of surprised is (as a guy) standing at Walgreen's at 6:30 on a Sunday morning with baby formula in one hand and pregnancy tests in the other....surprised but very, very blessed!

I've also attached a nice photo of Bob Whalen and his wife Mistie that was forwarded to me by a member of the Philadelphia Alumni Association Chapter.

Merry Christmas,God bless you all and BEAT ARMY!
